Engagement shoots.

A CHANCE TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER

Lots of people often feel they don’t need or want a pre-wedding shoot and that’s fine. But if the idea floats your boat and you fancy a little pre-wedding engagement shoot then step right up.

Lots of people arrive nervous but leave feeling that they have, dare I say, enjoyed themselves. Most of them tell me afterwards that it was a brilliant “practice” for the day itself, and are subsequently super-relaxed in their wedding photos. Engagement shoots are good like that: they’re wonderful ice-breakers.

There is no charge for your shoot if you come to me in Northamptonshire. However you can purchase the shoot if it is important that I come to you. Northamptonshire is a beautiful county with  lots of gorgeous countryside around. Just sayin’.

What if it rains though?

You don’t need to have lived in Britain very long to know that the weather has a mind of its own. But don’t worry, if you have your heart set on an outside location then we can look at rescheduling. Although we may not need to, some of my fave shoots have taken place in imperfect weather and, especially in big cities, there’s often somewhere cool to shoot undercover nearby.

The same rules apply to a wet wedding day. Sometimes you can make use of the rain – it can bring a whole new vibe to the photographs: wet pavements that reflect the light, ethereal overcast skies and puddles working as mirrors.

What time of day?

If it’s the summer (or forecast to be sunny) you really want to avoid the midday sun as it’s just not your friend. A few hours before sunset always works well but if you’re an early riser, morning light can be gorgeous. If it’s overcast, the sky is can act like a giant softbox modifier used by photographers) making the natural light soft and flattering, so an overcast day could actually be a great thing.

What if we're camera shy?

Feeling all camera shy and awkward – well I totally get it. Being in front of the camera isn’t everyone’s idea of fun – it isn’t mine either that’s why I’ll do everything I can to make you feel at ease, even if it means cracking some terrible jokes. Very few of my couples love the idea of being in front of the camera but all of them have said that they loved the shoot and it helped them relax on the wedding day itself, so it’s worth doing if you fancy it

What should I wear?

Colourful outfits work better on camera than head-to-toe black, avoid stripes and big logos. If you’re going to bring a bag, ensure it’s small or you don’t mind popping it on the ground so you can be hands-free for the shoot.

For brides, it’s a great idea to combine your engagement shoot with your hair and makeup trial so you can see what it all looks like on camera.

Make sure you’re still ‘you’, though. If you live in your jeans then it makes sense to wear
them. The most important thing is to look and feel like yourself.
